About

"Line, scale, colour and repetition are at the core of my method, tempered by a decorative quality to the finished work. I aim to instil a piece with a feel and atmosphere, where the juxtaposition of colour can evoke opposites, whether harmonious or jarring.
I use many different techniques to create a finished print. The first part of the process is to gather my ideas and images, which consist of photographs, sketches, drawings, paintings and colour swatches done on site or back in the studio, in a variety of media including pastel, watercolour, pen and ink, charcoal and graphite. Then experimenting photographically and digitally I scan them, paring some back to simple shapes and tones, textures and colours, before building them up again in layers of varying opacity, essentially creating a multi-layered, mixed media, digital collage. My process is ever evolving.
I aim to capture hidden glimpses and to evoke memories and associations of place and time and to therefore create a landscape of impression and emotion. The emptiness and scale, both inland on the moors and hills, and on the coast, or conversely, the more intimate areas of woodlands and rivers in the Borders are a constant source of material."

Justine is originally from London where she started her training at Camberwell College of Art studying Decorative Arts, specialising in textiles. From there she progressed to Edinburgh College of Art to join the Fine Art Printmaking Department, where she was trained in etching, lithography, screen printing and photography. Hers was the first year group who studied computer imagery, technology and digital manipulation as part of their course work, alongside the traditional techniques, and Justine believes that this has opened up many new and interesting opportunities for printmakers.
She now lives and works in the Scottish Borders.
